Artist Profile

Jodie Austin

I spent many years working in stone before I had the opportunity to delve into the world of ceramics, and what a world it is.

With the guidance of other potters and lots of experimenting I have been able to develop my own style and techniques. I like my work to reflect the rhythm in nature as I see it, to have a sense of organic essence , with the makers mark present in its construction.

Our family live on a small block of land tucked up the Wakamarina Valley in Marlborough. With a kune kune pig Peggy-Lee, a sheep Floss, who comes to the whistle, has slight identity issues and hopefully will be having a lamb this year, if the ram can get near her. A milking cow Pipi, some chooks and a large vege garden and orchard.

We are off grid being on solar and a small hydro scheme, in the ceramics workshop this means a kick wheel and gas kiln, a new challange when we first arrived but three years later I`m now experimenting with our own clay and wood firing. Ceramics is a world of never ending possibilities and challanges. I can see I'll be happy up to my elbows in mud for some time.
